Cautionary Tales For Children
Wonderful witty poems great for reading to your children. The stories and rhymes will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Research has shown how important YOU are to your children and how as a dad the things you do, and keep on doing, really count, whether you live with them, or you are a single dad and are only able see them once a month, once a week or more, what you do really matters. This site is dedicated to all dads but will be of special relevance to the single dad. Remember, you are half the reason your children exist and they need you whether you live with them or not. As their dad, you have what it takes to make their lives successful and fulfilling no matter how often you see them. This site is about all the positive things that we as parents have to offer our children.
Steam train

A magnificent wood burning steam locomotive with real rolling wheels

Steam train made from junk

Looking every inch like something that you'd buy from an expensive toy shop, this beautiful train is as satisfying to make as it is fun to play with. It's not as hard to make as it looks, and our instructions make it even easier. Once you've made it I'm guessing that you'll probably want to make track to go with it.
. . . The fully illustrated instructions include templates for the basic chassis and the cabin and measurements for all the important parts, but given that this model is made from junk, you'll also have to use your inventiveness where your parts are not exactly the same as mine. That said, don't limit yourself to just what junk packaging you have left over in the cupboard. If you want to start this project but you haven't collected up the right bottles and lids, why not just buy the ones you want next time you go to the supermarket.
. . . When you go looking for specific bottle shapes at the supermarket you'll suddenly see the range of packaging that is available to the junk modeler with "new" eyes. Thousands of different bottle and pack shapes, all made from high quality engineering materials... So why not get exactly the bottle shape and size you need for your model and then when you get home, empty the contents into a spare bottle (so you don't waste it) and you're ready to start. (The best products for shape are personal care and bath products, shower gels and soap dispensing hand wash bottles.)

home-made steam locomotive

Long before the internal combustion engine (that's the one in a car) was around, the external combustion engine dominated public transport. For over 100 years the big, fire gobbling, spitting-hissing, cloud making, roaring steam engine, a modern day dragon if ever there was one, stormed up and down the country inspiring awe and wonder in the hearts children and grown-ups alike. The first steam locomotive was built in 1794 by John Fitch in the United States, but he did not develop it. For thirty years nothing much happened until in 1829 Stephenson's Rocket changed the world when it showed beyond a doubt that passengers could be transported using steam locomotives. Only ten years later toy makers were cashing in on the growing fad for this new form of transport, by making "carpet railways". Since then almost every child has at one time or another been fascinated by trains, whether it be Brio, Thomas the Tank Engine, Casey Jones or model railway sets. And there is a lot to get excited about about. For a start steam engines are big powerful, visceral machines, that unlike cars, wear their muscle on the outside. Then there's the fact that railways opened up whole continents and gave the working public a means of getting out of the cities so that they could explore the countryside hundred's of miles away from where they lived and worked and further away from their daily grid than they could have ever dreamed.

So what exactly are you waiting for, make another dream come true, and make this wonderful model, perfect for hours of fun and enjoyment. When you've made this you might like to make the matching tender.

In fact, it must be said, often they have more play value than expensive shop bought toys.. Don't worry if you don't have exactly the same junk as us, making things from junk is not an exact science; let your creativity and problem solving skills show through. When making from junk there are no rules. Start collecting empty packaging right now and within a week or two you'll have enough to build your first model from Junk.

Making stuff from junk is a great way to recycle your rubbish, and very soon, just like your children, when you see an empty ice cream carton, a wire coat hanger, or a used Tetrapak you won't see rubbish, you'll see a rocket port, a ship, or a dog kennel.
